Would Facebook Go Dark To Boycott Online Piracy Bill?

We highly doubt this particular rumor would ever come true, but the blogosphere and Twitterverse are chattering that Facebook could pull the plug in protest over the Stop Online Piracy Act pending in the U.S. Congress.
Consider a day without Facebook — or Google, Twitter, Wikipedia or Yahoo, for that matter.
These heavily trafficked web sites are joining Facebook in considering a coordinated blackout as a powerful demonstration of what the Internet might look like if SOPA went into effect.
While implementation at this point seems unlikely — it’s dubbed the “nuclear option” after all — the rumor mill went into high alert after Markham Erickson, an executive with the industry trade group NetCoalition, confirmed to Fox News that companies were mulling over a blackout of services, despite what a boycott would do to users.
“Companies typically don’t want to put their users in that position,” Erickson said. ”The difference is that these bills so fundamentally change the way the Internet works. People need to understand the effect this special-interest legislation will have on those who use the Internet.”
So what might a boycott look like? Would Facebook go completely dark, or would users be re-directed to a site that posted a message about SOPA.  And, would Facebook ask users to take action–write a letter to a member of Congress, sign an online petition, or share a message with friends?
Actually, Facebook is a great platform to launch that type of advocacy campaign. Anti-SOPA ads andsponsored stories could be developed,  and of course, the option to share links to anti-SOPA news stories would spread quickly on the social networking site and could build support against the legislation.
Opponents claim one provision of the controversial bill would require Internet providers to monitor customers’ traffic and block web sites suspected of copyright infringement, which sets off alarms among Facebook and its counterparts.
SOPA is scheduled for a debate in the U.S. Senate in late January before its put to a vote.
Readers, what would you do if Facebook went offline for a day?

10 Ways To Keep Your Facebook Fans Following You

Facebook has over 800 million members, all of whom might bepotential customers for your company.
That’s great, but it doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t interact with those who currently like your page.
Here are 10 ways to keep your page in your your followers’ news feeds — and in their minds.

Ask Questions

Whether you’re posting a status update asking a question, or constructing a poll, people love to be asked what they think. Giving your followers a forum for their opinions will surely inspire some responses.
Most people spend hours on Facebook daily; this is a much easier outlet to share their thoughts than old-school letters.
Ask something creative or personal. If you sell cars, ask, “What was your first car?”  If you just started a new line of shoes, ask your customers which pair is their favorite and why.

Respond

People enjoy giving their two cents, but they don’t like talking to a void. Reply often to the responses posted by your followers; ask follow-up questions.
If your site receives a large volume of traffic, you can inspire fuzzy feelings by posting blog entries that address the most popular or intriguing questions you receive. You can also host free webinars to discuss topics that are getting a lot of wall time on your Facebook page.

Personalize Your Comments
Facebook doesn’t have threaded commenting, but we’ve all seen people addressed as “@username.”  Simply acknowledging the person who asked a question or offered a brilliant response will make that person feel special, and it gives him a great reason to post something on his own wall.
You’d be surprised at how often a personalized greeting can inspire a glowing status update.

Post Often, And During Peak Traffic

Condition your followers to expect new content from you. If you post daily, or several times per week, your readers will naturally start checking your page to see if you’ve posted something new.
Best of all, take it to them: Post during times when most of your users will be online — somewhere between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in your time zone, when everyone’s at work. Popping up in their news feed when they’re online will guarantee you’ll be on their radar.

Host A Promotion

Many of your fans started following companies on Facebook in order to qualify for giveaways or contests. Offer something for free to your users occasionally, on the condition that they “like” your page or update. This increases your number of fans, but it also ups your traffic – your users’ “like” activity will pop up in their friends’ news feeds and provoke more activity.  (Imagine the goodwill you’ll receive from the person who wins!)

Utilize Cross-Exposure

Integrate your website, your Twitter account, and your other social media sites with Facebook.
This will enable your clients to visit one site and contribute to a conversation on another, without leaving the original site they visited.
For example, if you’re a microbrewery asking fans for name ideas for your newest beer, you’ll increase the exposure for your marketing campaign by engaging both your Facebook and Twitter audiences.

Provide Information And Sneak Peeks

If your hours or location have changed, you have new products, or your policies are being updated, let your Facebook fans know.
Your readers will appreciate a heads-up, and it may remind them to stop by or place an order. When you are releasing new products or services, giving your established followers a preview of your new items will inspire curiosity and convey a sense of loyalty.
Your Facebook fans are interested in you; they need to feel that you’re interested in them. Reward their investment by engaging with them regularly, and take their feedback under consideration.
They are your fan base, so they’re going to have the best insight into what your current and future customers want. You may not actually earn 800 million fans, but you’ll garner the ones who are the right fit for you.

Facebook Built Most Of Timeline In Six Months

Facebook’s new timeline profile took about six months to build, from the initial infrastructure-review meeting to successfully turning on the 100 percent back-end load test.
Infrastructure Engineer Ryan Mack explained how those six months went in a post on the social network. Here are some of the highlights:
  • Timeline was built on four core Facebook technologies:
    • MySQL and InnoDB storage and replication;
    • Multifeed, which already powers the news feed was used for ranking;
    • Thrift communications ; and
    • Memcached caching.
  • In order to support Facebook’s ranking model for timeline, the social network would have had to store its entire data set in cache, including non-displayed low-value data, so “a massive denormalization process was required.”
  • The timeline aggregator began as a modified version of the Multifeed aggregator, but it now runs locally on each database, allowing Facebook to use its disks to maximum capacity without sending data over the network that won’t be displayed.
  • The results of large queries, such as ranking a user’s activity for the year 2010, are small and can be cached for long periods without invalidations.
  • Recent activity changes frequently, but it can also be regenerated quickly.
Mack also said:
Timeline started as a Hackathon project in late 2010 with two full-time engineers, an engineering intern, and a designer building a working demo in a single night.
The full team ramped up in early 2011, and the development team was split into design, front-end engineering, infrastructure engineering, and data migrations. By doing staged and layered prototyping, we achieved an amazing amount of development parallelism, and rarely was any part of the team blocked by another. Early on in the project we were simultaneously:
  1. Designing user interface prototypes with our pre-existing but non-scalable back end
  2. Building production front-end code on a simulation of the scalable back end
  3. Building the scalable back end using samples of denormalized data from a prototype of denormalization migration
  4. Building the framework to run the full-scale denormalization process
  5. Collecting and copying the data necessary for the denormalization
  6. Performing simulated load testing to validate our capacity planning estimates
In retrospect, that’s pretty crazy. We had to move a lot of mountains to go from the initial infrastructure-review meeting to successfully turning on the 100 percent back-end load test in just six months. Done another way, this project could have taken twice as long — and that’s being generous.
